Important Medical Notice

CosmoMET is NOT a medical device, NOT medical software, and NOT a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. The creator of this application is NOT a medical professional.

Always consult a qualified healthcare provider before beginning any exercise program, especially if you have a pre-existing medical condition, are significantly overweight, or have not been physically active recently.

What This Application Does

CosmoMET converts physical exercises into walking step-equivalents using published MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) values from academic research. These conversions are mathematical estimates, not direct measurements of your actual energy expenditure.

The MET values used come primarily from the Ainsworth Compendium of Physical Activities (2011), a widely cited reference in exercise physiology. However, individual metabolic responses vary significantly based on factors including but not limited to:

  • Individual fitness level and exercise history
  • Medical conditions (cardiovascular, respiratory, metabolic, orthopedic)
  • Medications that affect heart rate or metabolism
  • Exercise form and technique
  • Environmental conditions (temperature, altitude, humidity)
  • Age, sex, and body composition
  • Hydration and nutritional status

What This Application Does NOT Do

  • Does NOT provide medical advice. No output of this application should be interpreted as a medical recommendation.
  • Does NOT diagnose conditions. Step-equivalent counts are not diagnostic indicators of health or fitness.
  • Does NOT prescribe exercise. The exercises listed are options, not prescriptions. You should only perform exercises approved by your healthcare provider.
  • Does NOT measure actual calories burned. All caloric and step-equivalent values are estimates based on population-average data from published research.
  • Does NOT replace professional guidance. If you are working with a physician, physical therapist, or certified trainer, follow their guidance over any output from this application.

Weight-Adjusted Calculations

CosmoMET adjusts step-equivalent values based on your recorded body weight. While the underlying principle is supported by exercise physiology (heavier individuals expend more absolute energy at the same MET level), these adjustments are linear scaling approximations, not individualized clinical assessments.

The weight-adjustment formula does not account for body composition (muscle vs. fat mass), joint limitations, or individual biomechanics. Two people at the same weight may have very different metabolic responses to the same exercise.

When to Stop Exercising

Stop exercising immediately and seek medical attention if you experience:

  • Chest pain, pressure, or tightness
  • Shortness of breath disproportionate to your effort level
  • Dizziness, lightheadedness, or feeling faint
  • Heart palpitations or irregular heartbeat
  • Sharp or sudden joint pain
  • Numbness or tingling in extremities
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Unusual or excessive fatigue

No daily step-equivalent target is worth risking your health. If your body says stop, stop.
